OBITUARY: ANWAB Director Danlami Basharu is Dead
With sadness in our hearts, we announce the death today, Wednesday June 6, 2023, of
Barr. Danlami Umaru Basharu, Executive Director and founder of Anglo-Nigerian Welfare
Association for the Blind, ANWAB – operators of the ANWAB Centre for the Blind in Yaba,
Lagos. He died following surgery at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH,
Ikeja.
Danlami, as he is fondly called, was a multi-talented blind Nigerian who did all he could to
ameliorate the suffering of blind persons, including students, through the transcription of
textbooks into Braille, which enabled many more blind students to go to school and become
gainfully employed.
He was last December decorated by the Nigerian government with the national honour of
Member of the Order of the Niger, MON, and until recently was Chairman of the United
Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, UNCRPD.
Danlami Basharu attended Pacelli School for the Blind and Partially Sighted Children,
Surulere, Lagos; King’s College, Lagos; University of Wales, Aberystwyth (B.A.
(Ed./History, Hons.); Durham University Business School, (MBA); Trinity College,
Cambridge University (B.A., Law, LL.M and MA); and Nigerian Law School from where he
was called to the Bar in October 1987.
He was with Nigerian Television Authority as Senior Producer from 1984 to 1996 and also
as a presenter with Radio Nigeria from 1989 to 1990 before he became the Executive
Director of ANWAB which he co-founded with friends in the UK 1996.
th Born on 18 June 1959, Danlami was married with children and has been buried this
evening at Agege Cemetery in Lagos according to Islamic injunction.

On the third day after his demise, precise on the10th of June, 2023, prayers was organised at his residence – 52 Cemetry Street, Oyingbo. In attendance were his associates, friends, colleagues, families etc. See pictures –
